explore santorini...
Megalochori is one of the prettiest, quietest little villages on the island. It lies on a hill creating a labyrinth of steep alleys and streets that created the perfect hideaway for pirates back in the 17th century. Home of traditional houses, historical mansions and wine canavas, Megalochori is definitely a place to experience the rich wine tradition. The famous wineries of Boutaris, Gavalas, Venetsanos are located here.
In the center of the village, there is a wonderful traditional square with restaurants, tavernas and small art shops, a gathering place for the locals. Patron church St. Anargyrous is located in the center of the square and its feast takes place on the 1st of July. Some days before the feast, locals clean the church and decorate it with linen and flowers. On the eve of the feast, they store the food in the panigirospito and they go to the church in the evening. After the end of the ceremony, fires are set outside the church where big cauldrons with food are placed. People are gathered in the yard of the church drinking wine and dancing by the time the food is ready. Foreigners are always welcome at those feasts and treated with generosity.
The caldera cliffs of Megalochori with the spectacular view of the volcano and the islet of Aspronisi, are located only 500 m. away from the center of the village.
There, you can find beautiful pathways heading to the small church of Saint Nicolas or you can admire the natural heart shaped rock.
