AKROTIRI
The Akrotiri archaeological site is one of the most important well-preserved prehistoric settlements of Greece, dating back to the Bronze Age, and destroyed by an eruption of the volcano. The ashes from the volcanic eruption covered the entire island and the town itself. Thus the entire town with all its buildings and their contents has been preserved just like in Pompeii.
ANCIENT THERA
Maybe a lesser-known archaeological site but an important and fascinating one is the Ancient Thera in Mesa Vouno near Kamari. It is worth the effort to go up the steep mountain slope with the 16 hairpin turns either on foot (approximately 1 hour) or by car, to visit it and enjoy the panoramic view of the island and the Aegean sea.
